Cousins Jaume and Xavier Gramona, the fifth generation of the family, have worked for decades to build a benchmark brand of sparkling wines in the world of quality wines. What defines our wines is respect for the terroir, painstaking work in the winery and craftsmanship in the historic cellar. However, making Gramona sparkling wines known internationally, positioning them in the most reputable guides, and getting the most influential opinion leaders to taste and comment on each new vintage was as demanding a challenge as the work in the vineyard and cellar.
As head of the technical department, Xavier Gramona was responsible for making Jaume Gramona’s savoir faire known all over the world. At the same time, Xavier worked to ensure that Gramona collaborated in social, sporting and cultural initiatives in our country. The promotion of Catalan culture and the desire to provide it with a solid network of patronage and sponsorship led Xavier to participate in the creation of the Fundació Catalunya Cultura. He did this along with representatives of Fluidra, Fundació Banc Sabadell, Grup Damm, Grupo Planeta, Havas Media Group, Hewlett Packard and Fundació Carmen and Lluís Bassat, supported by Ferran Mascarell. This foundation aims to promote alliances between the business and cultural worlds. It works through initiatives such as the Patronage Law, which was passed in 2023, improving the legal and fiscal framework that fosters the commitment of companies to culture through philanthropy and sponsorship.
As vice president of the foundation and as president of the group working to pass the law, he was an active member until his untimely death in the summer of 2023. His work was recognized, appreciated, and gratefully acknowledged. The Xavier Gramona Award was recently launched by the Fundació Catalunya Cultura as a new feature of the Impulsa Cultura 2025 program. This award will recognise a project that, following completion of its first phase, stands out for its commitment, effort, involvement, and evolution during the work process.
The Xavier Gramona Award places emphasis on values such as active participation, perseverance, the ability to adapt, making the most of the tools and knowledge acquired, a courageous commitment to sustainability and the value of training. All of these are embodied by the character of the Gramona family and the winemaking project they have undertaken for more than a century.
The recipient of the award is selected by the same evaluation committee of independent experts that initially assesses the candidatures for the Impulsa Cultura programme and with which the Gramona family continues to be associated.
The entire Gramona family is thrilled that this distinction, which helps cultural projects to flourish, bears the name of Xavier Gramona. The path he blazed and his memory continue to inspire the House’s sponsorship and patronage activities. This is one of the cornerstones of our relationship with the world.
