When the vine’s life cycle enters its dormant phase, this is the time to respectfully explain to it, through our pruning work, how we would like it to grow next spring. It is a moment of intimate communication between winegrower and plant.

SENSIBILITY AND AWARENESS

At Gramona we have relearned what we had forgotten over 30 years ago: we prune to prolong the life of the vine and to keep its wood in good health. We focus on ensuring that the vine grows healthily and well beyond the next harvest.

RESPECTFUL PRUNING

This way of working is a declaration of intent that we share with the plants. We respect the organic growth of the vine, we do not force it to give us greater productivity or adapt it for mechanised work.

We adapt to the flow of the sap and perform small pruning cuts to minimise the wound, prevent infections and preserve the health of each of our vines. We don’t cut away everything, we leave some spare wood to facilitate the natural flow of the sap.

GREEN PRUNING

Respectful pruning establishes a relationship of trust between the person doing the pruning and the vine. We keep a close eye on the vine during its budding and flowering phases and, when necessary, we gently remove unwanted leaves and shoots using our fingers to help the vine adapt to the weather of each vintage.

ACADEMY OF PRUNING

The Simonit and Sirch Italian school works with a gentle pruning method, totally in line with our view of what viticulture should be. At Gramona we are spearheading the dissemination of its techniques in Catalonia and we ran a project to train the trainers, which led to the creation of the Academy of Pruning. Roc Gramona has been an instructor at the Academy since 2015 and was its director between 2018 and 2022.
